In August 2007, a vegetated roof was installed at Gannett Fleming’s corporate headquarters in Harrisburg, Pa. This roof was designed by the firm’s Architectural Group and installed on a converted plaza deck off of the Gannett Fleming East Building lobby. The installer was Houck Specialty Contractors and the green roof membrane system was a RoofGarden system from Carlisle Syntec.
The project was featured in the April 2008 issue of Eco-Structure magazine. The 1,400-square-foot, four-inch-thick vegetated roof has numerous environmental benefits. The “green” roof reduces energy costs through evapotranspirative cooling while minimizing and filtering stormwater run-off. The roof also offers some sound insulation. The roof effectively retains needed water while allowing excess water to drain.
"Gannett Fleming's decision to design this vegetated roof is a tangible example of our environmental commitment. We strive to incorporate sustainable design practices for our clients and within our firm," stated Charles H. Beauduy, RA, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, a senior associate for Gannett Fleming, Inc., and vice president of Ganflec Architects and Engineers, Inc.
